I just made a fresh install of FFXI on a new machine. What I'm wondering is which files should I copy over from my old machine in order to keep my macros and whatnot? Any help appreciated.

Final Fantasy XI/USER, I think. Every string of letters/numbers in there is one of your characters, and inside the folders are your macros saved at 1 file per book (along with other things).

I was wondering if its possible to just copy all the files to another computer and play ffxi without having to download all the updates.
Is it possible or I really have to install the game?

This, you can't just copy/paste files from one computer to another. The computer need registry values associated. As for copying the .dats, that's an interesting concept. I know the updater always does a check of all the files before doing the update. Possibly this would prevent you from having to do the 8 hour .dat update. Best of luck

As for macros, you can upload that stuff to the PoL server at the character selection screen with a keyboard using SHIFT + ALT + CTRL + B and then same keys + R to download them on the new computer.

You can just copy the .dats, or download the full version using the BG torrent. Be aware that any attempts to save yourself the 20 hours it takes to update is a direct violation of the TOS, even if it's totally legit and hurts no one.

This is possible, just copy the entire Playonline folder to an external hard drive, then install the new copy of ffxi, and overwrite the new playonline folder and it should work, did for me.

You may have to download some files, but not all of it and you will get some password errors in POL, but you just need to put your password in again if you do.

Or you could you just log in the game and save your macros to the server in the character selection menu then load them on the new machine in the same "character selection" menu

Unless that feature was removed this year?

It wasn't.

Before you uninstall on the character select screen hit:

Shift + Alt + Ctrl + B

When you have the fresh install and you're on your char screen, hit:

Shift + Alt + Ctrl + R

This will also save map markers and font colours.

If you want to do a hard back up save the mcr*.dat

It should be at:

Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\USER\{ID}\mcr*.dat
